- Pneumatic chipping
- Heavy equipment operation
Types:
| Type | NRR Range | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Foam plugs | 25-33 | High noise, continuous |
| Flanged plugs | 20-27 | Intermittent noise |
| Ear muffs | 22-31 | Variable noise, cold weather |
| Canal caps | 15-25 | Intermittent, quick on/off |
Hand Protection
Gloves Required:
- Material handling
- Sharp object handling
- Chemical handling
- Hot/cold materials
Glove Selection by Hazard:
| Hazard | Glove Type |
|---|---|
| Cuts/abrasion | Cut-resistant (ANSI level) |
| Puncture | Leather, cut-resistant |
| Concrete | Rubber or nitrile |
| Chemicals | Refer to SDS |
| Heat | Thermal/welding gloves |
| Cold | Insulated gloves |
| Electrical | Rubber insulating (rated) |
| General | Leather work gloves |
Do NOT Wear Gloves:
- When operating rotating equipment
- Near rotating shafts, drills, grinders
- Risk of caught-in hazard
Foot Protection
Safety Toe Required:
- All construction work
- Handling heavy materials
- Around equipment
Types:
| Material | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Steel toe | Strong, proven | Heavy, cold, sets off detectors |
| Composite | Lighter, no metal | Less protection |
| Alloy | Lighter than steel | Cost |
Additional Features:
- Puncture-resistant sole (construction recommended)
- Metatarsal guards (heavy material handling)
- Electrical hazard rated (EH)
- Slip-resistant sole
Boot Care:
- Inspect for damage daily
- Replace worn soles
- Replace if safety feature compromised
Respiratory Protection
Required When:
- Airborne hazards exceed PEL
- Dust, fumes, vapors present
- Silica exposure (concrete, masonry)
- Painting, coating operations
- Confined spaces with air hazards
Respirator Types:
| Type | Protection | Uses |
|---|---|---|
| N95 | Particulates | Dust, non-oil aerosols |
| P100 | Particulates | Oil and non-oil aerosols |
| Half-face APR | Gases/vapors | With proper cartridges |
| Full-face APR | Gases/vapors | Higher protection, eye |
| PAPR | Powered air | Extended use, higher PF |
| SCBA | Atmosphere supply | IDLH, unknown atmospheres |
