๐ Excavation Calculator
Calculate excavation volumes for trenches, foundations, basements, and grading work.
Quick Formulaโ
Rectangular Excavationโ
Volume (CY) = (Length ร Width ร Depth) รท 27
Trench Excavationโ
Volume (CY) = (Length ร Width ร Depth) รท 27
Sloped Excavationโ
Volume (CY) = Average Depth ร Area รท 27
Common Calculationsโ
Example 1: Foundation Trenchโ
Trench: 100 linear feet ร 2' wide ร 3' deep
Calculation:
- Volume = (100 ร 2 ร 3) รท 27
- Volume = 600 รท 27 = 22.2 cubic yards
Example 2: Basement Excavationโ
Basement: 40' ร 30' ร 8' deep
Calculation:
- Volume = (40 ร 30 ร 8) รท 27
- Volume = 9,600 รท 27 = 355.6 cubic yards
Example 3: Sloped Gradingโ
Area: 100' ร 50' = 5,000 sq ft Average depth: 1.5 feet
Calculation:
- Volume = (5,000 ร 1.5) รท 27
- Volume = 7,500 รท 27 = 277.8 cubic yards
Swell Factorโ
Excavated material takes up more space than in-place material:
| Material Type | Swell Factor |
|---|---|
| Sand | 1.10-1.15 |
| Clay | 1.25-1.35 |
| Rock | 1.35-1.50 |
| Mixed | 1.20-1.30 |
Adjusted Volume:
Haul Volume = Excavation Volume ร Swell Factor
Shrinkage Factorโ
When compacting fill, material shrinks:
| Material Type | Shrinkage Factor |
|---|---|
| Sand | 0.90-0.95 |
| Clay | 0.85-0.90 |
| Mixed | 0.90-0.95 |
Fill Needed:
Fill Volume = Required Volume รท Shrinkage Factor

Account for Slopes
Excavation with slopes requires calculating average depth. Measure depth at multiple points and average them.
