๐Ÿงฑ Drywall Calculator

Calculate drywall sheets, joint compound, tape, and screws for your project.

Quick Formulasโ€‹

Sheets Neededโ€‹

Sheets = (Total Wall Area รท Sheet Size) ร— Waste Factor

Common Sheet Sizesโ€‹

SizeSquare FeetBest For
4' ร— 8'32 sq ftResidential, easy handling
4' ร— 10'40 sq ft9' ceilings, fewer joints
4' ร— 12'48 sq ftCommercial, long runs
4' ร— 14'56 sq ftHigh ceilings

Coverage Calculationsโ€‹

Wall Areaโ€‹

Wall Area = Perimeter ร— Height

Example: 12' ร— 14' room with 8' ceilings

  • Perimeter = (12 + 14) ร— 2 = 52 linear feet
  • Wall Area = 52 ร— 8 = 416 sq ft
  • Sheets (4ร—8) = 416 รท 32 = 13 sheets + waste

Ceiling Areaโ€‹

Ceiling Area = Length ร— Width

Example: 12' ร— 14' room

  • Ceiling = 12 ร— 14 = 168 sq ft
  • Sheets (4ร—8) = 168 รท 32 = 5.25 = 6 sheets

Deductions for Openingsโ€‹

OpeningTypical SizeDeduction
Standard door3' ร— 7'21 sq ft
Double door6' ร— 7'42 sq ft
Window (average)3' ร— 4'12 sq ft
Large window4' ร— 5'20 sq ft
Pro Tip

For residential, many estimators don't deduct for standard doors and windows โ€” the "extra" drywall covers waste from cutting. Only deduct for very large openings.

Waste Factorsโ€‹

SituationWaste Factor
Simple rectangular rooms5-10%
Rooms with many corners10-15%
Cathedral/vaulted ceilings15-20%
Complex shapes, angles20-25%

Materials Neededโ€‹

Joint Compound (Mud)โ€‹

TypeCoverageNotes
All-purpose (premixed)~60-80 sq ft per gallonMultiple coats
Lightweight~80-100 sq ft per gallonEasier sanding
Setting compoundVariesTime-sensitive

Rule of thumb: 1 gallon per 100 sq ft of drywall (all coats)

Tapeโ€‹

TypeRoll LengthCoverage
Paper tape500 ft~500 linear ft of joints
Mesh tape300 ft~300 linear ft of joints

Estimating tape:

  • Each 4ร—8 sheet has ~20 linear feet of edges
  • Calculate: (Total sheets ร— 20 LF) รท 2 = tape needed

Screwsโ€‹

ApplicationSpacingScrews per Sheet
Walls16" OC framing~32 screws
Ceilings12" OC or per code~40 screws
Fire-ratedPer specOften more

Rule of thumb: 1 lb of screws per 500 sq ft

Drywall Typesโ€‹

TypeThicknessUse
Standard (white)1/2"Most walls
Lightweight1/2"Easier handling
Fire-rated (Type X)5/8"Garages, rated assemblies
Moisture-resistant (green)1/2", 5/8"Bathrooms, kitchens
Mold-resistant (purple)1/2", 5/8"High-moisture areas
Soundboard5/8"Sound isolation
Ceiling board1/2"Sag-resistant for ceilings

Quick Reference Tableโ€‹

Room SizeWalls (8' ceiling)CeilingTotal Sheets (4ร—8)
10' ร— 10'10 sheets4 sheets14 sheets
10' ร— 12'11 sheets4 sheets15 sheets
12' ร— 12'12 sheets5 sheets17 sheets
12' ร— 14'13 sheets6 sheets19 sheets
14' ร— 16'15 sheets7 sheets22 sheets

Includes ~10% waste, no deductions for openings

Sample Material Listโ€‹

For a 12' ร— 14' room with 8' ceilings:

MaterialQuantityNotes
1/2" Drywall (4ร—8)19 sheetsWalls + ceiling
Joint compound5 gallonsAll-purpose
Paper tape1 roll500 ft roll
Drywall screws2 lbs1-1/4" coarse thread
Corner bead32 LFIf needed

Labor Estimatesโ€‹

TaskProduction Rate
Hanging (walls)40-60 sheets/day (2-person crew)
Hanging (ceilings)30-40 sheets/day (2-person crew)
Taping (all coats)300-500 sq ft/day
Sanding500-800 sq ft/day
Ceiling Note

Ceiling drywall is harder to hang and finish. Budget more time and consider using a lift for larger projects.
